In a session at the United Nations in New York on Thursday, Turkey’s permanent representative, Ahmed Yildiz, criticized Israel for what he described as “irresponsible attacks” on Syria. He stated that these military actions are currently obstructing global efforts intended to purge the nation of chemical weapons.

While addressing the UN Security Council during a meeting focused on the Middle East, Yildiz highlighted the vital importance of clearing away chemical weapon remnants. He noted that the ongoing strikes and military activities carried out by Israel are making these collaborative initiatives increasingly difficult to complete.

Impact on International Safety and Facilities

Yildiz provided specific details on the consequences of the strikes, stating: “These attacks have damaged former chemical weapons facilities, increased the costs and risks of destruction operations, and endangered the safety and freedom of local residents as well as OPCW personnel.” His comments referred to the staff of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons.

The representative urged the international community to intervene and stop such strikes, arguing that the total eradication of Syria’s chemical arsenal is a humanitarian necessity and essential for the security of the region. Yildiz also mentioned that the systematic roadblocks previously established by the deposed Syrian regime have been removed, suggesting that the current government provides a fresh opportunity for more productive cooperation with the OPCW.

Syria’s Stance on Weapons Disposal

Ibrahim Olabi, Syria’s ambassador to the UN, reaffirmed the commitment of Damascus to eliminate the chemical weapons legacy left behind by the former administration. He expressed Syria’s determination to finalize this issue permanently and stressed that its dedication to the global non-proliferation framework is a vital component of both international and regional security.
