Washington has expressed its support for the cessation of hostilities declared by the Syrian Ministry of Defense across specific districts in Aleppo, including Bani Zaid, Ashrafieh, and Sheikh Maqsoud.
American Envoy Commends Local Restraint
Through the social media site X, U.S. Special Envoy for Syria Tom Barrack stated that Washington “warmly welcomes” the overnight truce established in Ashrafieh and Sheikh Maqsoud. Barrack lauded the restraint and good faith demonstrated by every party involved in the process. He further extended his thanks to the government of Syria, the SDF, community figures, and regional authorities for their roles in enabling the halt in hostilities.
The envoy suggested that this ceasefire might pave the way for a more permanent state of tranquility and expanded discussions. According to Barrack, continued cooperation is vital for guiding the Syrian nation and the surrounding region toward durable peace and security. While he admitted that difficulties persist, he stressed that mutual interests make collaboration more beneficial than continued conflict.
Efforts to Extend the Truce
Work is currently being done to prolong the ceasefire past its original Friday morning cutoff. “We are working diligently to extend this truce and the spirit of understanding beyond the set deadline of nine o’clock this morning,” Barrack commented.
Previously, Syria’s Ministry of Defense had declared late Thursday that the pause in fighting would be active from 3 a.m. until 9 a.m. local time on Friday. This measure was designed to conclude the military status in the targeted neighborhoods while reinstating the rule of law and the authority of state institutions.
