Despite advancements in food distribution, the United Nations warned on Tuesday that over one million residents in the Gaza Strip are still in desperate need of housing support. Stéphane Dujarric, the spokesperson for UN Secretary-General António Guterres, provided this update during a press briefing in New York on Jan. 7.

Progress in Nutritional Aid

Dujarric informed journalists that the most recent distribution of humanitarian aid will, for the first time since 2023, satisfy the basic nutritional needs of the Gazan population. This marks a significant shift from previous months. “Families had previously been receiving only between 50% and 75% of the calories needed to remain healthy,” the spokesman stated.

Substantial Aid Shipments Reach the Strip

The UN official noted that more than 10,000 metric tons of essential supplies were transported into the region over the past week. This cargo consisted of various necessities, including food items, cooking materials, and hygiene products. Additionally, the shipment provided animal feed, blankets, and winter apparel to help residents cope with the current conditions.

The Humanitarian Impact of Prolonged Conflict

The Gaza Strip is still struggling with massive obstacles regarding the provision of sustenance and housing for hundreds of thousands of households. This ongoing humanitarian catastrophe follows the Israeli war that commenced two years ago, a conflict that has resulted in the deaths of more than 70,000 Palestinians.
