In a major shift in foreign policy, U.S. President Donald Trump has issued a memorandum mandating the United States’ withdrawal from 66 international organizations. The announcement, released by the White House on January 8, marks a significant step in the administration’s efforts to reassess global commitments.

Detailed Breakdown of the Withdrawal

The directive targets a diverse array of institutions, including 31 entities associated with the United Nations and 35 non-U.N. organizations. As reported by Washington, Jan. 08 (SANA), the decision focuses on ending the use of U.S. taxpayer dollars for groups the administration claims are inefficient or prioritize globalist agendas over American interests.

Alignment with National Priorities

According to CNN, the White House statement clarified that the withdrawal is part of a broader mission to stop funding international bodies that are perceived as being detrimental to U.S. priorities. Supporting this stance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio posted on the social media platform “X” that the move fulfills a major campaign promise to cease support for organizations he described as “hostile” or “wasteful.” Rubio emphasized that the current administration would “always put America and Americans first,” while indicating that the status of other international organizations remains under review.

A Broader Strategy of Disengagement

This latest action is integrated into a wider strategy to diminish Washington’s financial role within the United Nations. The administration has previously sought to end U.S. involvement in the Human Rights Council and has extended the suspension of financial aid to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA). Furthermore, the Trump administration has already withdrawn from UNESCO and has formally announced its intent to exit both the World Health Organization and the Paris Climate Agreement.
