Following an incident where he was shot and injured, journalist Murhaf al-Shaer was abducted by the National Guard militia on Tuesday in the province of Sweida. The kidnapping took place in the southern Syrian region after the journalist sustained gunshot wounds.
Official Condemnation of the Abduction
In a statement provided to SANA, Qutaiba Azzam, a media official in Sweida, denounced the kidnapping in the strongest terms. Azzam emphasized that the militia bears full accountability for al-Shaer’s fate and insisted on his instantaneous release.
Background of Threats and Family Tragedy
Reports from local sources indicate that al-Shaer had been targeted with threats in the past due to his political stances. Furthermore, he is the sibling of activist and poet Anwar Fawzat al-Shaer, who was killed by unidentified gunmen in the eastern part of Sweida province back in December 2025.
