A significant number of families are reportedly departing from the Sheikh Maqsoud and Ashrafieh districts of Aleppo. This movement of civilians comes as a direct result of a recent escalation involving the SDF (Syrian Democratic Forces), which has heightened tensions within these specific residential areas.

Rising Tensions Force Civilians to Flee

On January 8, 2026, reports documented the exit of local inhabitants from their homes in Aleppo’s northern neighborhoods. The escalation by the SDF has created an environment of instability, prompting many to seek safety elsewhere. Photographic evidence from the scene shows the scale of the departure as residents navigate the current security challenges in Sheikh Maqsoud and Ashrafieh.

Broader Security and Regional Context

This displacement in Aleppo occurs amid a series of developments across the country. While SDF activities cause unrest in certain districts, military police have been positioned along the roads and access points to Baniyas to ensure stability and security. Meanwhile, in the northern Lattakia countryside, civil defense teams and Syrian Firemen are working to extinguish blazes along the route connecting Kassab and Qastal Maaf.

In other parts of Aleppo, there are signs of restoration, such as the opening of the Khan al-Harir Archaeological Market. Similarly, in Daraya, efforts are being made to transform the damage left by the defunct regime into opportunities for residents to return. Additionally, Damascus International Airport has recently experienced a surge in traffic activity, reflecting a different dynamic compared to the localized displacement currently seen in Sheikh Maqsoud and Ashrafieh due to the ongoing SDF escalation.
