On Friday, Jan. 9, President Ahmad al-Sharaa hosted high-level talks at the People’s Palace in Damascus with top European Union officials. The meeting involved European Council President António Costa and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, alongside the presence of Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani.
Developing Bilateral Cooperation and Regional Stability
The dialogue centered on identifying strategies to bolster the relationship between Syria and the European Union. A significant portion of the conversation was dedicated to the rebuilding process and the reinforcement of stability across Syria and the surrounding region. Additionally, the officials reviewed prospects for economic collaboration, sustainable growth, humanitarian relief, and challenges regarding migration in Europe.
Commitment to National Unity and Dialogue
Both the Syrian leadership and the EU representatives highlighted the vital importance of upholding Syria’s territorial unity. They agreed on the need to deepen political communication to better serve the interests of the Syrian populace and to establish a fair and productive partnership with the EU.
Prior to these discussions, the EU delegation visited the Jobar district of Damascus. This neighborhood serves as a stark reminder of the conflict, having sustained extensive damage from bombings conducted by the deposed regime.
