On January 7, the Syrian Ministry of Economy and Industry announced via its Telegram channel the official inauguration of the al-Madina “Food City” raw sugar refinery. Situated within Hassia Industrial City, this facility represents the largest industrial plant of its kind in the nation.
Production Capacity and Technical Partnerships
The new refinery boasts a daily production output of 3,000 tons, which scales to an annual capacity of between 800,000 and 1 million tons. The project integrated cutting-edge technology from the German firm BMA and was brought to fruition by the Tunisian organization BIA.
Rehabilitation and Employment Impact
According to reports from the ministry, the site was subjected to an extensive rehabilitation program following its liberation. These efforts included significant upgrades to mechanical equipment and specialized training for the workforce, effectively boosting the facility’s daily reception capacity to 5,000 tons. Furthermore, the operation of the refinery has generated approximately 250 direct jobs.
Quality Standards and Economic Goals
Successful operational trials have demonstrated that the refinery produces sugar that aligns with European standards. The primary goal of the facility is to provide for domestic demand while establishing a foundation for future exports to international markets.
