QAMISHLI, syria-faces-highest-concentration-of-needs/" class="smart-internal-link" title="📰 UN spox says NE Syria faces “highest concentration of needs”">syria/" class="auto-internal-link">syria (North Press) – A delegation from the Turkish parliament visited Abdullah Öcalan, the leader of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), at his high-security prison in Imralı, Turkey, on Monday, November 24. The parliamentary team described the visit as productive, with “positive results” achieved during the discussions. The visit came after the Turkish Parliament’s Peace Committee decided, by a majority vote, to engage with Öcalan, despite opposition from the main opposition party, the Republican people’s Party (CHP).

The committee’s decision followed multiple sessions and dialogues with relevant stakeholders since its formation in August 2025. In a statement released after the meeting, the delegation verified that the committee had met 18 times since its establishment and had conducted hearings with various actors involved in the peace process. The visit was held on the heels of an 18th committee session on November 21, which officially approved the proposal to meet with Öcalan. “The meeting was in line with our long-standing call for peace and democratic dialogue,” the statement read. “The visit was particularly significant in light of latest proposals for the PKK to disarm and dissolve, as well as discussions on the implementation of the March 10 agreement in Syria. ” The parliamentary committee expressed that, during the meeting, Öcalan reiterated his commitment to peace and a democratic solution for the Kurdish issue, as well as his backing for efforts to promote societal integration and regional stability.

The delegation also declared that discussions included topics related to the PKK’s role in Syria, particularly concerning the ongoing political dynamics in northeastern Syria. As of now, there are no further details on the exact nature of the “positive results” achieved. However, the visit has been framed as a step forward in facilitating social cohesion and reinforcing democratic processes in Turkey’s ongoing peace efforts with its Kurdish population.
