📰 UN committee says Syria’s transitional phase remains fragile, thousands’ fate unknown

QAMISHLI, syria/" class="auto-internal-link">syria (North Press) – A United Nations committee stated on Sunday that Syria’s transitional phase remains “fragile” one year after the removal of Bashar al-Assad’s regime, citing multiple challenges amid ongoing insecurity and hostilities. Moreover, the committee emphasized that “the unknown fate of thousands of forcibly disappeared persons remains an open wound,” and noted that overcoming the devastating legacy of 14 years of war and widespread destruction will require substantial strength, backing, and patience. Tomorrow, December 8, Syrians mark the first anniversary of the fall of the Baath regime and its long-standing authoritarian rule, following a swift offensive by opposition factions after more than 14 years of crisis.

In a statement issued to mark the anniversary, the UN committee praised syrian/" class="auto-internal-link">syrian efforts to enhance stability and reconciliation, expressing hope that the path toward peace and prosperity for all Syrians continues. The committee called for intensified regional and international cooperation to backing peaceful processes and build trust, stressing that inclusive national dialogue remains a central path to realizing the Syrian people’s aspirations for dignity and security/" class="auto-internal-link">security.
