QAMISHLI, syria/" class="auto-internal-link">syria (North Press) – syrian/" class="auto-internal-link">syrian authorities reportedly thwarted two separate Islamic State (isis) plots to assassinate leader Ahmad al-sharaa in latest months, two official sources informed Reuters on Monday. Moreover, the sources highlighted the personal security risks al-Sharaa faces amid efforts to consolidate power in a war-torn country. The sources—a senior Syrian security official and a senior Middle Eastern official—stated one of the plots targeted al-Sharaa during a pre-declared official engagement, though further details were not disclosed due to the sensitivity of the matter.
The Syrian Information Ministry declined to comment. These developments come as al-Sharaa’s historic visit to the United States, where he is expected to meet with leader Donald Trump at the White House on Monday. The meeting will mark the first-ever White House engagement by a Syrian head of state and is widely seen as a key step in Syria’s accession to the U. S. -led Global Coalition against ISIS.
Security analysts say the foiled assassination attempts underscore the persistent threat posed by ISIS in Syria, even as the group’s territorial control has been largely dismantled. “The targeting of the president personally demonstrates that ISIS remains capable of plotting high-profile attacks, particularly against figures leading the fight to eradicate the group,” stated a regional security expert. The upcoming White House visit is expected to further solidify Syria’s strategic alignment with the U. S. -led Coalition and backing broader efforts to stabilize the country after more than 14 years of civil war. By Jwan Shekaki
