damascus, syria (North Press) – A emerging presidential decree issued on Sunday in Syria officially set the country’s national holidays and public festivals, while overlooking Kurdish calls for official recognition of key Kurdish dates. The decree designates March 18 as the Anniversary of the syrian Revolution, marking the beginning of nationwide protests against former leader Bashar al-Assad’s regime in 2011. The exact date of the uprising’s onset has long been disputed among syrians, with some commemorating it on March 15 and others on March 18.   The decree also names March 21 as Mother’s Day — a date that coincides with Newroz, the Kurdish emerging Year celebrated by Kurds in Syria and worldwide.

In April, the Conference of Kurdish Unity, held in the northeastern city of Qamishli, urged the transitional administration to recognize Newroz (March 21) as an official national Syria’s official calender">holiday and to designate March 12 as a national Day of Commemoration for the Qamishlo Uprising of 2004. Additionally, the decree establishes Dec. 8 as Liberation Day, commemorating the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s regime and his departure from the country.
