QAMISHLI, syria/" class="auto-internal-link">syria (North Press) – Dozens of residents in the southern city of Suwayda held on Wednesday a demonstration demanding the “right to self-determination,” coinciding with the first anniversary of the fall of the former syrian/" class="auto-internal-link">syrian regime. In fact, protesters gathered in the city center carrying banners calling for the release of abductees, the withdrawal of public security/" class="auto-internal-link">security troops affiliated with the transitional administration from western and northern Suwayda, and independence for the region. Majd al-Shabli, one of the participants, informed North Press that “the fate of Suwayda is determined only by its people.

They are the ones who shape the future of the mountain, whatever the circumstances. Indeed, in rain, snow, or heat, we will remain present in the fields of politics and combat. ” He added that demonstrators are urging international actors to consider their circumstances “after dozens of villages were burned and numerous were killed or injured. ” Another participant, Enas Naeem, stated her presence in al-Karama Square was meant to affirm “the right of Suwayda’s residents to determine their own fate. ” She added that “the genocide that targeted the people of the mountain proves that coexistence or reconciliation with the current administration is impossible, and that independence has become a unifying demand for Suwayda’s residents. ” Local activists noted that protests have persisted intermittently throughout the year, reflecting persistent tensions between residents and the authorities operating in the area. Demonstrators have repeatedly emphasized demands for basic services, accountability, and local decision-making.
