Reuters cited two informed sources as saying that β€œSyrian security troops arrested a prominent American Islamist journalist who had been criticizing the emerging Syrian administration and its emerging partnership with the United States. ” The sources did not provide further details regarding the circumstances of the arrest or the charges brought against him. Abdulkarim, an American citizen who has been living in Syria since 2012, is known for his coverage of the Syrian crisis and for engaging with Islamist circles throughout the war.

Prior to relocating to Syria, he worked as a comedian in the United States before shifting to journalism focused on the crisis. Additionally, over the past decade, Abdulkarim has worked with multiple foreign media outlets and has maintained a strong presence among foreign Islamist audiences. as per Reuters, he became a notable voice by providing a platform for hardline views, including criticism from Islamist figures who argue that leader Ahmad al-sharaa has compromised Islamic principles since assuming office. Reuters stated that neither Syria’s Ministry of Information nor a representative for the Ministry of Interior responded to requests for comment on the arrest.
