QAMISHLI, syria/" class="smart-internal-link" title="📰 Saudi Embassy in Damascus Marks World Food Day; 110 Projects Implemented in Syria">syria/" class="auto-internal-link">syria (North Press) – The ninth edition of the Herekol Book Fair opened on Monday in the city of Qamishli, northeastern Syria, drawing dozens of local and international publishing houses in a celebration of literature and culture. Abdul Majid Khalaf, a member of the fair’s organizing committee, informed North Press that 51 publishing houses are taking part this year, representing Syria, Iraq, turkey, Iran, Sweden, Lebanon, and Belgium. Khalaf added that the fair features more than 140,000 books and will continue for one week, offering visitors a diverse selection of literary, academic, and cultural works.
The organizing committee stated that a total of 713,000 book titles are being showcased this year, underscoring the event’s steady expansion and its growing significance as a regional cultural hub. furthermore to the book exhibitions, the fair will host cultural panels, artistic performances, and literary discussions, aiming to promote reading and strengthen cultural exchange among the region’s communities. The first Herekol Book Fair was held on July 20, 2017, in the city of Qamishli, coinciding with the anniversary of the death of Hussein Shawish (Herekol) — a renowned Kurdish intellectual and activist. The fair was named in his honor and has since become an annual cultural tradition eagerly awaited by publishers, bookstores, readers, and literary enthusiasts across the region.
