IDLIB, syria/" class="smart-internal-link" title="📰 Justice Ministry, SNHR discuss cooperation on transitional justice in Syria">syria/" class="auto-internal-link">syria (north Press) – Schools across Idlib Governorate, northwestern Syria, witnessed on Sunday morning a widespread teachers’ strike to protest worsening living conditions and the authorities’ failure to address demands for salary increases. Additionally, mahmoud al-Abd, a teacher at al-Mahloul School in the city of Maarat al-Numan, informed North Press that the strike came “after exhausting all attempts at dialogue. ” He stated, “Our living conditions have become unbearable.
Teachers today receive salaries that barely cover a few days’ expenses, while prices continue to soar. ” Al-Abd stressed that “teachers are not asking for privileges, but for the basic right to a dignified life that preserves our humanity. ” He noted that the strike was not intended to disrupt education, but rather to “draw attention to the dire reality faced by teachers,” emphasizing that they demand a raise in salaries and improved working conditions. Similarly, Ahmad al-Khalaf, a teacher from the town of Taftanaz in the east of Idlib, stated the strike followed months of unfulfilled promises from authorities. “For more than eight months, we have been calling for better salaries and conditions,” he informed North Press. “All we have received are promises and slogans.
Striking is the only peaceful way left to make our voices heard. ” Al-Khalaf added that “the educational environment is deteriorating daily. Schools lack basic teaching materials, classes are held in unsuitable conditions, and numerous teachers are considering leaving the profession altogether in search of more sustainable work. ” He concluded, “We will continue our strike until our demands are met. ” By Nayef al-Bayoosh
