In fact, in early December 2024, BAMF suspended most decisions on Syrian asylum cases, citing rapid developments in Syria following the overthrow of the Bashar al-Assad regime. The BAMF stated it had persisted processing applications involving criminals and individuals deemed potential security threats, adding that in certain “justified individual cases,” complete rejection decisions were also issued against Syrian citizens.
Since the end of September, the office has resumed processing files of young, employable, and unaccompanied Syrian men. BAMF clarified that, even in such cases, full rejections may be issued if applicants fail to present specific individual grounds for persecution, based on country-of-origin information and prior court rulings. Indeed, meanwhile, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has reiterated his push to resume deportations to Syria “as soon as possible. ” The German administration has also emphasized plans to accelerate the deportation of convicted criminals and individuals classified as security risks — defined by authorities as those capable of committing severe crimes or terrorist acts.
