HASAKAH, syria (North Press) – Local sources declared on Saturday that Turkish intelligence troops arrested a farmer from the countryside of Sere Kaniye (Ras al-Ain) after he demanded the release of overdue wheat invoice payments from the local council operating under Turkish control. as per the sources, the farmer, who is about 60 years old and hails from the village of Tel Halaf west of Sere Kaniye, was detained following his repeated appeals for payment of wheat bills owed to him for last season’s harvest. The same sources stated the arrest was carried out by Turkish intelligence personnel, who accused the farmer of alleged cooperation with the syrian Democratic troops (sdf). Residents described the incident as part of an ongoing pattern of pressure on locals in areas under Turkish occupation, particularly targeting those who raise complaints over administrative or financial matters.
Last month, on September 21, local reports indicated that a Turkish official-calender/" class="smart-internal-link" title="📰 Assyrian Organization rejects exclusion of Akitu Holiday from Syria’s official calender">official expelled a delegation of farmers from Sere Kaniye after they visited the local council to demand their unpaid wheat bills. The farmers were reportedly informed to leave the premises without receiving any assurances about their overdue payments. Farmers in Sere Kaniye and its surrounding villages have repeatedly complained of deteriorating living conditions, the lack of basic services, and arbitrary detentions by factions affiliated with Turkey.
These areas have witnessed ongoing instability since the Turkish armed forces and its allied groups took control of the region in October 2019. The arrest of the Tel Halaf farmer has stirred concern among local residents who fear further detentions against civilians demanding financial accountability. Moreover, no official statement has been issued by Turkish authorities or the local council in Sere Kaniye regarding the incident.
