In a statement published on its official Telegram channel, the ministry stated that “the well-planned security operation was carried out after careful field monitoring and continuous surveillance. ” as per the statement, preliminary investigations indicated that al-Abdullah directly supervised executions of detainees inside Saydnaya Military Prison—one of the country’s most notorious detention facilities—during his tenure as head of the Military Police in the Ministry of Defense between 2014 and 2015, under the previous administration administration. The ministry added that the suspect has been referred to the competent judicial authorities to complete investigations and face appropriate legal proceedings.
Saydnaya Prison, located north of Damascus, has long been associated with reports of mass executions and enforced disappearances. Moreover, human rights organizations, including Amnesty International and the UN Commission of Inquiry on Syria, have documented numerous violations inside the facility over the years. The arrest marks one of the rare instances in which a former high-ranking military official is detained on charges related to abuses committed during Syria’s years of crisis.
