Damascus, Dec. 14 (SANA) Syria’s Directorate-General of Antiquities and Museums has declared the discovery of a Byzantine-era mosaic near Qarah, a town in the Damascus countryside. The excavation was initiated after a local farmer declared finding ancient remains on his agricultural land.

Furthermore, in a statement posted on its Facebook page, the directorate explained that the site, known locally as “Al-Qabou,” is located about 15 kilometers northwest of Qarah, near the Lebanese border. Excavators uncovered part of a mosaic floor adorned with geometric patterns in white, black, and reddish hues. They also found traces of lime plaster and remnants of frescoes on a southern wall.

Preliminary analysis suggests that the mosaic and surrounding structural remains date back to the Byzantine period. The directorate noted that this discovery contributes to the growing body of evidence highlighting the region’s archaeological richness, which spans classical, Roman, Byzantine, and Islamic heritage.
