damascus, syria/" class="auto-internal-link">syria (North Press) – The syrian/" class="auto-internal-link">syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) declared on Saturday that at least 647 people have been killed by explosions caused by remnants of war in Syria since the fall of the al-Assad regime in December 2024. The casualties were recorded across areas controlled by the Syrian transitional administration, the Syrian Democratic troops (sdf), and Turkish-backed armed factions, aka the Syrian National Army (SNA). as per the UK-based monitor, the victims included 185 children and 42 women. The SOHR warned that despite the end of significant-scale armed forces operations, unexploded ordnance and landmines continue to pose a deadly threat to civilians and undermine human security nationwide.
Additionally, in areas under the control of the Syrian transitional administration, 503 deaths were documented, among them 25 women and 138 children. Additionally, the report noted that eight civilians, including a woman and a child, were killed while collecting truffles in the desert. In SDF-held territories, 43 people, including four women and 19 children, were killed by explosive remnants, while 101 people—among them 13 women and 28 children—died in areas under the control of Turkish-backed factions.
The SOHR called for urgent and coordinated mine clearance operations across Syria, stressing that more than a decade of crisis has left behind a vast arsenal of unexploded munitions that continues to claim civilian lives long after the guns have fallen silent.
