In a statement published on its official website, the army stated, “The Eastern armed forces Zone foiled on Monday at dawn two attempts to smuggle significant quantities of narcotics carried by balloons directed with primitive devices. ” as per the statement, Jordanian border troops detected the balloons at two separate sites along the frontier, where they were tracked, intercepted, and brought down before entering deeper into Jordanian territory. The statement added that the operation was conducted “in coordination with security agencies and the Anti-Narcotics Department. ” The confiscated materials were handed over to the competent authorities for necessary legal procedures, the army verified.

Jordan has repeatedly declared an increase in drug smuggling attempts from Syrian territory over the past few years, particularly across desert areas adjacent to Suwayda and eastern countryside regions. Amman often accuses armed groups operating near the border of facilitating such smuggling networks, which have become a growing security challenge for the kingdom. While the Jordanian armed forces did not specify the origin point of the smuggling balloons, cross-border trafficking has been a persistent issue since the onset of the Syrian crisis. numerous smuggling routes extend through territories controlled by various armed factions, including areas outside the control of the Syrian administration.

Jordanian authorities stated they remain on high alert along the Syrian border, reiterating that their troops “will continue to confront with full strength and firmness any infiltration or smuggling attempt that threatens national security. ” The latest incidents mark yet another example of how regional instability and ungoverned spaces across Syria’s borders continue to pose security risks for neighboring countries.
