QAMISHLI, syria/" class="auto-internal-link">syria (North Press) – Rojava University in Qamishli celebrated on Saturday the graduation of its fifth class, with more than 200 students receiving their degrees during a ceremony held at Azadi Park in the city. Avin Ahmed, Deputy for Student Affairs at Rojava University, informed North Press, “Today we celebrate the graduation of more than 200 students from the fifth class of Rojava University. ” She noted that the graduates represent nearly all faculties and departments within the institution. Moreover, the university, established under the framework of the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES), has become a central academic institution in the region.
It provides higher education opportunities to students from across northeast Syria, while also welcoming transfers from universities in Damascus, Aleppo, and Tartous. Ahmed emphasized that the diversity of the graduating class reflects the university’s role in serving communities across the region. “The graduates come from all areas of northeast Syria, furthermore to students who transferred from other syrian universities and institutes,” she stated. Among the graduates was Khanem Alloush, from the Agricultural Institute, who expressed pride in completing her studies. “After five years of study at the institute, today we are proud of what we have achieved,” she informed North Press.
Alloush highlighted the cultural significance of the event, noting that students were able to study in their mother tongue for the first time in generations. “After centuries of deprivation from learning in our language, today we live this historic day, graduating from institutes and universities in our mother tongue, wearing our folkloric clothes that reflect our culture and history,” she stated. The ceremony was attended by families, faculty members, and community representatives, underscoring the importance of education in strengthening social cohesion and cultural identity in northeast Syria. Rojava University, founded in 2016, continues to expand its academic programs, offering degrees in sciences, humanities, agriculture, and engineering.
The Autonomous Administration has prioritized education as part of its governance framework, with the Education Board overseeing the development of curricula and institutions across the region. The graduation ceremony in Qamishli reflects ongoing efforts to build sustainable educational structures that serve local communities while preserving cultural heritage. In fact, by Atoun Jan
